Hiking with Caleb

Caleb and I did a hike on the Peralta Canyon/Geronimo Cave trail at the start of spring. It was a lot of fun. The highlight of the hike for Caleb was running across this little critter:
That would be a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. He was only about 3 feet long, so he was still kind of small. However, he was not pleased to be disturbed:
We eventually managed to get him safely off of the trail. The trail is a great one, and you end up hiking into some seriously cool rock formations. Seriously HUGE rock formations as well. Look closely and you can see Caleb and his friend Tanner in the lower right third of the photograph:
It was a beautiful day to hike, and because of some recent rain, the hedgehog cactus were in bloom. They are my favorite desert bloom. Vibrant and beautiful with the added contrast of coming from one of the meaner looking cacti out there:
Caleb had a great day, and so did I. It is fantastic that he and I can share this wonderful pastime together.
He's a good kid.
